Lake Hollingsworth Water Sampling Begins Following Reports of Dead Fish

LAKELAND, FL — The City of Lakeland announced Wednesday that water sampling has begun at Lake Hollingsworth following reports of dead fish in the lake.

According to the city, the Public Works Department collected a water sample yesterday (May 13) to assist the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in determining the cause of the fish kill.

Public Works crews responded Tuesday after receiving reports of dead fish at the lake and notified state officials of the incident.

City officials said the FWC has been receiving reports of gizzard shad fish deaths in lakes across the region. The agency indicated the deaths may be linked to current warm temperatures and dry weather conditions affecting area waterways.

When Eye In The Sky News walked around Lake Hollingsworth Thursday morning, there were no visible signs of dead fish and no noticeable odor coming from the lake.

The city said additional information will be released as it becomes available while state officials continue evaluating the situation. Nothing further at this time.
