LAKELAND, FL — The Lakeland Police Department station was temporarily closed Sunday afternoon after a citizen brought in a box containing what is believed to be an old hand grenade.
According to the Lakeland Police Department, the citizen was helping clean out the personal belongings of a family member when the item was discovered. The citizen then brought the box to the police station.
As a precaution, police closed the station and established a perimeter around the building while the Tampa Bomb Squad investigates the item and handles its disposal. Lakeland Fire Rescue and Polk County Fire Rescue are also on scene assisting with the response.
Police have not reported any injuries associated with the incident. The department said it will provide an update when the police station reopens.
