BARTOW, FL – Martha Santiago announced Monday that she will not seek re-election for a third term on the Polk County Board of County Commissioners, bringing an end to nearly eight years of service on the board.
Santiago, who was first elected in November 2018 and re-elected in 2022, is currently serving as chairperson of the commission. In a statement released May 11, she said she is ready to begin the next chapter of her life after accomplishing many of the goals she set when first running for office.
During her time on the commission, Santiago said her priorities included public safety, infrastructure improvements and supporting economic initiatives aimed at creating jobs in Polk County.

Santiago said she plans to spend more time traveling with her husband, Alex, and with her children and grandchildren.
Santiago was selected by fellow commissioners to serve as Vice Chair in 2020 and Chair in 2021. She is the owner of Leadership Consultants, LLC, and spent decades working in education before concluding her career in 2017. Santiago began teaching in 1978 and later served as a school and district administrator with Polk County Public Schools. She also served as a Board Trustee, Dean of Academic Affairs and Provost at Polk State College. In 2022, Santiago was recognized by Polk Vision, Junior League of Greater Lakeland and Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce for her contributions to the community. Born in New York City, Santiago said she plans to continue serving local organizations and the community after leaving office.
“My purpose in life is to serve others,” Santiago said. “I love Polk County and will continue working with local organizations and in the community to ensure Polk is the best county in which to live, work, and raise a family.”
