LAKELAND, FL — A new free learning library is coming to John McGee Park in Lakeland as part of an effort to improve literacy access for children and families across Polk County.
The Kiwanis Club of Lakeland and the South McKeel Academy K-Kids announced they will install their sixth Kiwanis Learning Library at John McGee Park, located at 2399 Edgewood Drive South. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 9 a.m.
The project was selected by fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students participating in the school’s K-Kids Service Leadership Program as part of an annual community service initiative focused on literacy and educational access.

According to organizers, the free learning libraries are designed to provide children and families with around-the-clock access to books while encouraging reading and learning outside the classroom.
The initiative comes as literacy challenges continue across Polk County. Organizers cited education data showing that only about half of Polk County third graders are currently reading at grade level. Research has shown that students who read proficiently by third grade are more likely to graduate high school and achieve long-term academic success.
“Books should never be a luxury for a child,” said Stephanie Hoskins, president of the Kiwanis Club of Lakeland. “These learning libraries help remove barriers by placing free books directly into neighborhoods where children and families can access them anytime.”
This newest installation marks the sixth Kiwanis Learning Library in the Lakeland area. Existing locations include Oscar J. Pope Elementary, Southwest Elementary, Blake Academy, Barnett Family Park, and Kidstown Preschool.
Community members, local leaders, and media are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting event at John McGee Park.
