78-Year-Old Man Killed While Crossing Dundee Road

WINTER HAVEN, FL — A 78-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle Friday night while attempting to cross Dundee Road between Winter Haven and Dundee, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched around 9:55 p.m. Aug. 28 to Dundee Road, also known as State Road 542, near the intersection of Overlook Drive. First responders arrived and found the pedestrian deceased at the scene.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, a gray 2007 Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Dundee Road while the pedestrian was attempting to cross from the south side of the roadway to the north side.

Investigators said the pedestrian was carrying a flashlight, but the driver of the Toyota did not see him until the moment of impact. The crash occurred approximately 500 feet from the nearest crosswalk.

At this point in the investigation, no charges are anticipated. Investigators said impairment, speed and distracted driving do not appear to have contributed to the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing.

The eastbound lanes of Dundee Road were closed for approximately two hours and 45 minutes while deputies investigated the scene. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash. Nothing further at this time.
