LAKELAND, FL — Construction continues to move forward on a new wildlife overpass along Interstate 4 in Polk County, part of a major Florida Department of Transportation project designed to improve driver safety and reconnect wildlife habitat divided by the interstate.
The wildlife crossing is being built approximately 1.6 miles east of the State Road 33 interchange. According to FDOT, crews are currently shaping embankments on both sides of I-4 while completing earthmoving operations, slope stabilization, drainage improvements and preparations for the bridge structure.
Once completed, the wildlife overpass will span 44 feet in width and feature soil, vegetation and noise-reducing walls intended to create a natural environment for animals crossing above the interstate.
The project is part of FDOT’s broader I-4/SR 33 Interchange Improvements and Wildlife Crossings program, which also includes roadway reconstruction, interchange upgrades and additional wildlife-safety infrastructure aimed at reducing vehicle collisions involving animals.

In addition to the overpass, FDOT is constructing a wildlife underpass north of the I-4 crossing as part of the SR 33 Exit 38 improvements. The underpass will replace an older culvert with a bridge designed to allow both water flow and wildlife movement beneath the roadway. Wildlife fencing is also being installed to direct animals safely toward designated crossing areas.
The completed project is expected to reconnect wildlife habitat between the Tenoroc Fish Management Area and the Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve.
FDOT said species expected to use the crossings include Florida black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, otters, raccoons and other small mammals.
