SEBRING, FL – May 5, 2026 — Highlands County’s burn ban has been extended through 11:59 p.m. on June 16, 2026, due to ongoing extreme drought conditions and an increased risk of wildfire. The ban was issued by the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners and may be lifted earlier by the Fire Chief if conditions improve or extended further by the Board if necessary.
The burn ban applies to all areas of Highlands County, including unincorporated areas, municipalities, and improvement districts, unless a municipality has a differing ordinance or charter provision.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service Tampa Bay, the county remains under extreme drought conditions, with the Keetch-Byram Drought Index currently at 600, indicating very dry soil and elevated fire potential. Federal fire agencies also project above-normal wildfire activity for May, with dry vegetation continuing to pose a significant risk.

Prohibited activities include campfires, bonfires, warming fires, outdoor fireplaces, open cooking fires, burning yard waste or debris, fireworks, and unpermitted controlled burns.
Allowed activities include cooking on contained gas or charcoal grills and activities authorized by the Florida Forest Service.
Violations may result in fines up to $500, up to 60 days in jail, or both.
