LAKELAND, FL — Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center has become the first hospital in Polk County to offer the Edison Histotripsy System by HistoSonics, a first-of-its-kind, non-invasive robotic platform that uses focused sound waves to mechanically destroy and liquefy targeted liver tumors without using incisions, needles, ionizing radiation, or thermal heat.
The FDA-approved Edison Histotripsy System uses ultrasound imaging and proprietary technology to treat liver tumors in a single outpatient procedure. Histotripsy works by creating microscopic bubbles that break down targeted tumor tissue while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
“We are dedicated to bringing the newest and most promising technologies to our patients,” said Dr. Timothy J. Regan, president of Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center and chief medical officer of Lakeland Regional Health. He said the technology provides a revolutionary treatment option for many patients with liver disease who are not eligible for, or choose not to undergo, traditional surgical procedures.
Doctors have studied histotripsy for more than 20 years, including clinical trials in the United States and Europe, where it has successfully treated both primary and metastatic liver tumors.
Dr. Manuel Molina-Vega, a surgical oncologist at the Tampa General Cancer Institute | Lakeland Regional Health Hollis Cancer Center, said the technology gives physicians another option to treat tumors that may be difficult to remove surgically while expanding advanced treatment options for patients.
Lakeland Regional Health is currently one of only 11 hospitals in Florida offering the Edison Histotripsy System, further expanding access to cutting-edge liver cancer treatment close to home for patients across Central Florida.
