LAKELAND, FL — April 7, 2026 – A 76-year-old Vietnam veteran was fatally shot by Polk County Sheriff’s Office deputies Tuesday after he fired at them during a suicide threat response on Socrum Loop Road West in Lakeland. The armed suspect was identified as Ronald Breese. He had no prior criminal history or arrests.
According to the sheriff’s office, Breese had been drinking with his wife earlier in the day. He later contacted the Veterans Crisis Line, stating he was armed and intended to harm himself. The Sheriff’s Office was notified, and five deputies responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with Breese, who was seated outside with a firearm pointed to his head. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation.
During the encounter, an unknown vehicle entered the driveway. Deputies believed Breese’s wife was still inside the home. The driver, his wife, exited the vehicle, ignored commands, and approached the suspect. Breese then fired at the deputies. Four deputies returned fire.
The deputies involved were identified as:
- Deputy Roque
- Deputy Wrenn
- Deputy Sidor
- Deputy Bellido
- Deputy Kennedy
Breese was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 10th Judicial Circuit Officer Involved Deadly Incident Task Force is investigating the deputy-involved shooting. Nothing further at this time.
