LAKELAND, FL — The SPCA of Florida is offering free spay and neuter services for personally owned backyard cats in Polk County beginning today, September 1, and continuing until available funding runs out.
The program is being funded through a Florida Animal Friend Grant and is aimed at reducing unwanted litters while helping residents who may otherwise be unable to afford the procedures.
Through the SPCA Florida Veterinary Clinic Backyard Cat Program, services include spaying or neutering, a required ear tip, rabies vaccination and a pain-relief injection lasting three days.
No appointment is necessary. The program is limited to the first 15 backyard cats each day, Monday through Friday. Cats must be dropped off between 7 and 7:30 a.m. and must arrive in a trap. Traps can be rented through SPCA Florida.
Additional services, including vaccines, microchipping and preventative care, are available at the owner’s expense.
