Polk County Fire Rescue has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS® Gold Award for the second consecutive year, recognizing the department’s continued commitment to providing high-quality emergency medical care throughout Polk County.
In addition to the Gold Award, Polk County Fire Rescue also earned the American Heart Association’s Heart Attack and Stroke honor roll distinctions for exceeding additional performance standards in the treatment of stroke, cardiac arrest and heart attack patients.
According to the department, the awards recognize EMS agencies that provide rapid, evidence-based prehospital care for patients experiencing life-threatening medical emergencies before arriving at a hospital.
“Polk County Fire Rescue’s members work hard every day to provide Polk County residents and visitors the highest quality of medical care,” Fire Chief Shawn Smith said in a statement.
During 2025, PCFR crews responded to 299 ST-segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) heart attack calls, 902 cardiac arrest incidents and 1,539 stroke alerts, totaling 2,740 emergency medical calls.
Deputy Chief Charles True said the recognition reflects the dedication and life-saving decisions made daily by EMS personnel in the field.
