LAKELAND, FL — Florida Department of Transportation announced Monday morning, October 26, that a new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. Highway 98 and State Road 471 is officially open to traffic. According to FDOT, traffic along U.S. 98 has also been shifted to a new roadway alignment extending from Earnest Road to north of SR 471.
Motorists should expect slower traffic and temporary flagging operations as crews make pavement marking adjustments and drivers become familiar with the new traffic pattern.
Currently, traffic is limited to one lane in each direction, including through the roundabout. A second lane in each direction is expected to open during later phases of construction.
FDOT is reminding drivers to observe the posted speed limits of 25 mph through the roundabout and 45 mph throughout the remaining construction zone.
Drivers entering the roundabout must yield to vehicles already circulating, which have the right-of-way. Traffic moves counterclockwise, and motorists should wait for a safe opening before entering.
Officials also remind motorists to yield to pedestrians and bicyclists at designated crossings and avoid stopping or changing lanes inside the roundabout.
Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution as construction continues.
