BARTOW, FL — Polk County Fire Rescue is now ranked among the top 7% of fire departments nationwide after earning a Class 2 Public Protection Classification from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), a designation that could lead to lower property insurance premiums for some homeowners and businesses.
The improved rating marks a one-class increase from the department’s previous classification and will take effect on Nov. 1, 2026. Insurance companies use ISO ratings to help determine property insurance rates and underwriting.
“This is an independent confirmation that the people of Polk County are served by one of the premier fire rescue organizations in America,” Fire Rescue Chief Shawn Smith said. “It reflects thousands of hours of training, unwavering professionalism, exceptional teamwork, and the county’s commitment to investing in public safety.”
The ISO’s Public Protection Classification program evaluates communities on a scale from Class 1 to Class 10, with Class 1 representing the highest level of fire protection. The rating is based on fire department operations, staffing, equipment and training (50%), water supply (40%), and emergency dispatch communications (10%).
County officials said the new Class 2 rating reflects Polk County Fire Rescue’s continued commitment to providing high-quality emergency services while potentially reducing insurance costs for property owners.
