HIGHLANDS COUNTY, FL — Detectives with the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office are investigating after human remains were discovered Tuesday afternoon near State Road 70.
According to the sheriff’s office, an officer with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found the remains around 3 p.m. on July 7, 2026, on a firebreak road near the intersection of State Road 70 and Dexter Avenue.
Investigators responded to the scene and launched a death investigation. At this time, detectives say there are no indications of foul play.
The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office is working with the District 10 Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death and identify the deceased.
The investigation remains active, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
