Burn Ban in Highlands County Extended Through May 5

SEBRING, FL — Highlands County officials have extended a countywide burn ban through 11:59 p.m. on May 5, 2026, citing ongoing extreme drought conditions and an elevated wildfire risk.

The burn ban was issued by the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners and applies to all areas of the county, including unincorporated areas, municipalities, and improvement districts, unless a municipality has its own differing ordinance. Officials said the ban may be lifted earlier by the Fire Chief if conditions improve or extended further by the Board if necessary.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Tampa Bay, Highlands County remains under extreme drought conditions, which are expected to persist. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index is currently at 575, indicating very dry soil conditions and a high potential for wildfire. Federal fire agencies’ April outlook also calls for above-normal wildfire activity in the region.

Under the ban, campfires, bonfires, outdoor fireplaces, open cooking fires, yard waste burning, fireworks, and unpermitted controlled burns are prohibited. Cooking on contained gas or charcoal grills and activities authorized by the Florida Forest Service remain allowed.

Violating the burn ban is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500, up to 60 days in jail, or both.

Additionally, a Modified Phase III “Extreme” Water Shortage Order remains in effect through July 1, 2026, placing further water use restrictions across the county. Officials urge residents to follow all restrictions to reduce wildfire risk.
