Babson Park, FL – Webber International University announced that Samantha Wilson, a recent graduate of its Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant (BSOTA) program, has become the program’s first graduate to pass the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) Exam.
Samantha Wilson chose to major in Occupational Therapy Assistant after early exposure to working with individuals with special needs during high school. She participated in events such as the Special Olympics, supporting Exceptional Student Education (ESE) students. This experience ignited her passion for helping neurodivergent individuals develop independence, build confidence, and engage in meaningful activities, inspiring her pursuit of a career in occupational therapy to help people achieve personal goals and full potential.
Edward Barreto Acosta, the program’s Academic Fieldwork Coordinator, highlighted Wilson’s achievements, noting that she is one of three students in Florida to obtain a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy assistant and one of three in the nation to graduate with a BSOTA degree including a minor in Health Services Administration—all while competing as a quarterback for the university’s flag football team. As a student-athlete, Wilson played, started, and served as captain on the flag football team, developing leadership, teamwork, and discipline.
Reflecting on her time at Webber, Wilson stated that the experience was extremely rewarding both athletically and academically. She credited the faculty and staff for being tremendously supportive, encouraging, and always willing to help her succeed.
Dr. Anita Abuathareh, BSOTA Program Director, acknowledged the vision, dedication, and effort required to develop the distinctive program, as well as the determination, resilience, and grit needed to complete it. She congratulated Wilson, calling the achievement an extraordinary accomplishment and historic milestone. It serves as an inspiring example for future students and represents a significant advancement in Occupational Therapy Assistant educational programs.
The BSOTA program is an entry-level, 120 credit-hour degree that includes a minor in Health Services Administration (HSA). It trains and qualifies graduates to work in the occupational therapy field. The program is the first in Florida to obtain Candidacy status from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) and the only OTA program in the United States with an HSA minor. Webber achieved initial ACOTE accreditation for the program in spring 2025.
