TAMPA, FL – A 23-year-old Tampa man was fatally injured early Friday morning after being struck by a vehicle while lying in the roadway following a crash on Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP said the incident began at approximately 11:05 p.m. Thursday, May 7, when a Kia Sorento driven by a 19-year-old Lakeland woman was traveling westbound on Interstate 4 east of I-75. Investigators said the driver lost control of the SUV, entered the center lane, and was struck by a tractor-trailer transporting food items driven by a 53-year-old Wesley Chapel man. Both vehicles traveled into the center median, where the tractor-trailer overturned. Neither driver was injured.

While troopers investigated the crash, FHP patrol vehicles and FDOT-contracted Walsh trucks were positioned in the closed inside lane of westbound I-4.
At approximately 2:15 a.m., a Toyota Corolla driven by a 23-year-old Tampa man collided with one of the Walsh trucks. The impact pushed the truck into the adjacent Lazy Days RV dealership, where it struck two parked RVs.
According to FHP, a 23-year-old Tampa man riding as a passenger in the Toyota exited the vehicle with injuries and was lying in the roadway when he was struck by a Hyundai Santa Cruz driven by a 73-year-old Riverview man. The passenger suffered fatal injuries at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
