Winter Haven, FL — Despite rumors circulating on social media, the City of Winter Haven has confirmed there is no sinkhole on Hwy 17. Instead, significant traffic disruptions on southbound Hwy 17 are due to an underground stormwater pipe issue being addressed by the Florida Department of Transportation.
The far-right lane on southbound Hwy 17, from Avenue R SW toward the bridge, is closed, and drivers approaching the intersection at Cypress Gardens Boulevard will be diverted through the intersection.

Additionally, the far-right turn lane on Cypress Gardens Boulevard for those turning onto Hwy 17 is also closed. Authorities warn of significant backups in the area and urge drivers to seek alternate routes.
FDOT crews are working to resolve the stormwater issue, but no estimated completion time has been provided. Motorists are advised to plan accordingly and avoid the area if possible. Nothing further at this time.
