CELEBRATION, FL — A Michigan man was fatally struck by a possible lightning strike Tuesday evening while on a walking path behind a hotel in Celebration, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to the area behind a hotel at 700 Bloom Street at approximately 6:25 p.m. after a lightning strike was observed nearby and a man was found unresponsive.
Bystanders were performing CPR when deputies arrived. The man was transported to Celebration Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
On Wednesday, deputies identified the victim, with assistance from federal law enforcement, as 20-year-old Matthew Eric Jenkins of Shelby Township, Michigan. His parents have been notified. Homicide detectives are awaiting the medical examiner’s determination of Jenkins’ official cause of death. Nothing further at this time.
