Kissimmee Approves Grant-Funded Backup Generators for Police Department and 9-1-1 Center

KISSIMMEE, FL — The Kissimmee City Commission has approved a project to install new backup generators at the Kissimmee Police Department and the City’s 911 Communications Center, ensuring emergency services can continue operating during power outages.

The project is fully funded through an $808,368 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant, meaning it will cost local taxpayers nothing.

Commissioners awarded a $591,690 contract to Ring Power Corporation for the installation. The remaining $216,678 in grant funding will be reserved for any unexpected construction expenses.

The project includes installing a 750-kilowatt generator at the Police Department and a 175-kilowatt generator at the 911 Communications Center, which dispatches police, fire, and EMS calls throughout the city.

City Manager Mike Steigerwald said the upgrade will help ensure emergency communications and public safety operations remain uninterrupted during power outages, regardless of the cause. The work also includes equipment delivery, installation, testing, and staff training before the generators are placed into service.
