Cellphone Found in Driver’s Hand Following Fatal Davenport Crash

DAVENPORT, FL— The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon in Davenport.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened at approximately 2:24 p.m. on June 13 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17/92 and Sunny Acres Road.

Preliminary evidence and witness statements indicate a 37-year-old man driving a semi-truck was traveling southbound when he observed a Toyota Corolla traveling northbound and repeatedly drifting across the center line. Investigators said the Corolla, driven by a 38-year-old man, eventually crossed completely into the southbound lane and entered the path of the semi-truck.

The semi-truck driver attempted to brake and avoid the collision but lost control of the vehicle. The crash resulted in severe front-end damage to both vehicles.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. First responders pronounced the driver of the Toyota deceased at the scene.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, a cellphone was found in the driver’s hand, indicating distracted driving may have been a factor in the crash. The driver of the semi-truck was not seriously injured. The investigation remains ongoing. Nothing further at this time.
