$10 Flat Fee Available for Yard Waste Disposal in Polk County Through June 1

Polk County is encouraging residents to begin hurricane season preparations early by offering a reduced $10 flat fee for self-hauling yard waste to the county’s disposal site in Auburndale.

According to Polk County officials, the temporary rate is available now through Monday, June 1, at 4 p.m. for residents using the North Central Transfer Station, located at 3131 K-Ville Ave. The initiative is aimed at helping residents clear tree limbs, branches and other yard debris before storm season intensifies.

County officials said regular residential yard waste collection services will continue as scheduled, allowing up to four bags of yard waste to be placed curbside weekly for collection.

During the May 5 Board of County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Mike Scott encouraged residents to take advantage of the discounted rate and prepare their properties before a tropical system threatens the area.

Solid Waste Director Brian Cogswell said many residents wait until a storm is approaching to begin cleanup efforts, but added that now is the best time to trim branches and remove compromised limbs.

Requirements for residents using the North Central Transfer Station:

• Residents must show a valid Florida driver’s license with a Polk County address or proof of residency, such as a utility bill.

• Yard waste may be delivered in anything from a pickup truck to a 20-foot trailer.

• Loads should be covered with a tarp to help keep debris secure during transport.

• Dump trailers are not allowed at the facility.

• Commercial and small business haulers are not eligible for the $10 flat fee program.
