LAKE WALES, FL — The first confirmed rabies case in Polk County this year involves a bat found on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in the 1700 block of Masterpiece Road in Lake Wales.
A resident discovered his dog standing over the bat in the yard and was uncertain whether any interaction occurred. The bat was impounded and its body sent to the State Laboratory in Tampa for testing. Results received today, March 25, 2026, by Animal Control confirmed the bat tested positive for rabies.
The dog remains under quarantine at the family home.
Sheriff Grady Judd stated: “Rabies is a deadly disease, and we urge everyone to stay alert and avoid contact with stray or wild animals acting strangely. If you see something suspicious, call us, don’t take chances with your health.”
