47-Year-Old Woman Dies in Hwy 17 Motorcycle Crash in Winter haven

WINTER HAVEN, FL – March 23, 2026 – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at approximately 4:10 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 17 and Avenue O SW in Winter Haven.

According to the PCSO, a 2013 Mercedes was traveling southbound on Highway 17 approaching the intersection with Avenue O SW. Simultaneously, a 2006 Suzuki motorcycle, operated by 47-year-old Shena Carty, was traveling northbound on Highway 17.

The Mercedes attempted to turn onto Avenue O SW and entered the path of the oncoming motorcycle, resulting in a collision. Carty was fully ejected from the motorcycle.

Carty was not wearing a helmet. Upon arrival, first responders found her unresponsive with significant injuries. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

The driver of the Mercedes sustained minor, non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The investigation by the PCSO Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit remains ongoing. Nothing further at this time.
