Traffic Alert: Short-Term Road Closures for Sewer Line Restoration

The City of Lakeland Water Utilities Department is set to wrap up a major infrastructure upgrade with the final restoration phase of the Western Trunk Gravity Sewer Line Project. Starting Wednesday, February 18, 2026, and continuing through Friday, February 20, 2026 (approximately three days), crews will perform restoration work that requires temporary road closures in the southwest area of the city.

The affected areas include portions of Josephine Street and Highland Street between Beech Street and Southern Avenue. These roads will be closed to through traffic during the work period.

Traffic detours will route vehicles to Ariana Street, with clear guidance provided by marked detours, digital message boards, and standard signage to ensure smooth flow and safety for drivers.

Importantly, access to the SW Park Complex will remain open at all times. While Highland Street closes to through traffic, visitors can still enter and use the park facilities without interruption.

Residents in the vicinity may notice increased daytime noise and the presence of construction equipment as crews complete paving, landscaping, and other restoration activities following the main construction.

This long-term project replaces aging 1980s-era infrastructure with modern upgrades, including:

  • A new 42-inch gravity trunk sewer line
  • A modern wastewater pump station
  • New force mains and collector lines

These improvements boost wastewater capacity, enhance public safety, improve system reliability, and strengthen emergency response capabilities for Lakeland residents.

The City appreciates residents’ patience during this final step in the project.
