Lake Wales School Zone Speed Camera Grace Period Underway

The City of Lake Wales has initiated a 30-day grace period for its automated speed enforcement cameras on eastbound and westbound Burns Avenue at Lake Wales High School.

During this grace period, which counts 30 active school days (including early-release days), any detected violations result in a warning notice mailed to the registered address of the vehicle’s license plate. No citations are issued at this time.

The cameras are active during school hours and record violations when speeds exceed posted limits. Motorists are urged to adhere to the reduced speed limits whenever the school zone flashing lights are active. Even when the lights are off during the school day, the cameras enforce the standard posted speed limit.

The grace period concludes on Tuesday, March 17. Full enforcement, including issuance of citations, begins on Wednesday, March 18.

Each citation issued after the grace period carries a $100 fine, with no points added to the driver’s license. Fine revenue is allocated to school crossing guard programs, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the State of Florida, and the City of Lake Wales.

When a potential violation is detected, the system captures the date, time, location, vehicle speed, and license plate number. All potential citations undergo review and approval by a Lake Wales Police Officer before issuance.

This information is based solely on the official details provided regarding the program’s implementation at Lake Wales High School. Drivers are encouraged to observe all posted speed limits to ensure student safety in the area.
