A Tampa Police Sergeant is recovering in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic early Sunday morning, according to a press release from the Tampa Police Department.
The incident occurred on March 15, 2026, just after midnight. The sergeant was working a traffic post following a concert at Raymond James Stadium.
Preliminary investigation details indicate that a 44-year-old male driver, operating a 2006 Chrysler Crossfire, was traveling eastbound on W Martin Luther King Dr, just past N Himes Ave. The vehicle suddenly left the center traffic lane and entered the outside lane. The sergeant, who was directing traffic and wearing a reflective traffic vest, lawfully entered the roadway and was struck by the vehicle, which failed to stop at the time of impact.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. As of this morning, he is listed as stable and in good spirits.
The driver remained on scene and cooperated with investigators. He was cited for Careless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury.
Speed or impairment are not believed to be factors in the crash.
“I’m incredibly grateful and relieved to know that one of our officers is ok after an incident that could’ve been deadly,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “It serves as a stark reminder that even in some of the most routine tasks, our officers risk their lives to keep our community, and in this case concert-goers, safe.”
Additional information may be released as the investigation continues.
