Polk Reminds Residents to Avoid Contact with Wild and Stray Animals

Polk County (DOH-Polk) is advising residents to avoid all contact with wild and stray animals to reduce the risk of rabies exposure.

Health officials recommend immunizing pets and livestock according to a veterinarian’s schedule. Pets should be kept under direct supervision and on a leash while livestock should be secured on property. If an animal bites a pet or livestock, contact a veterinarian immediately and notify Polk County Sheriff’s Animal Control at 863-577-1762.

Residents should not handle, feed, or attract wild or stray animals with pet food or open garbage. Anyone bitten or scratched by any animal should seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to DOH-Polk at 863-519-8300. Wild animals should never be adopted or brought indoors; instead, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Stray animals can be removed from neighborhoods by calling Polk County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control at 863-577-1762. Wildlife, including bats, should be prevented from entering homes, schools, and other occupied spaces.
