On June 9, 1881, Polk County welcomed its first-ever newspaper, The Bartow Informant. Founded by D.W.B. Boully, the four-page publication began serving the small but growing community of Bartow, which then had a population of just around 100 residents.

The newspaper quickly became a vital part of local life, keeping citizens informed and connected. In an era when money was scarce, Boully accepted subscriptions through bartering—residents could pay with chickens, eggs, butter, potatoes, corn, or even fish.

This creative exchange system reflected the pioneer spirit and resourcefulness of early Floridians.

The Bartow Informant set the foundation for local journalism in the county and marked the beginning of a long tradition of community storytelling in Polk.

Today, it stands as a symbol of how dedication and innovation helped build the institutions that continue to inform and unite the region.
