ORLANDO, FL — A Lakeland woman was killed and a 9-year-old was seriously injured Saturday morning after their Honda Accord crashed into a concrete traffic barrier and caught fire near Interstate 4 in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. on September 6 near the eastbound I-4 exit ramp to Daryl Carter Parkway at mile marker 70.
Troopers said the 44-year-old Lakeland woman was driving a 2017 Honda Accord eastbound when she suffered a possible medical episode. The vehicle traveled onto the grassy median separating the exit ramp from the main travel lanes before continuing through the intersection at Daryl Carter Parkway.
The Accord then struck a curb and crashed into a concrete traffic barrier near the entrance ramp to eastbound I-4. Following the impact, the vehicle caught fire.
The driver was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced deceased. The 9-year-old passenger was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to FHP.
Troopers also believe the Honda was involved in a separate crash involving a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan on I-4 near mile marker 69 shortly before the fatal collision. No injuries were reported in that crash.
Both crashes remain under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Nothing further.
