Lake Wales, FL — On Monday, September 29, several parents at Hillcrest Elementary School received parking citations while waiting in their vehicles along Carlton Avenue in the school pick-up line. The Lake Wales Police Department reported that officers from the traffic unit responded to complaints about traffic issues in the area.
According to the LWPD, on September 16 and 17, officers issued verbal warnings to educate drivers. On September 25 and 26, they issued citations under Lake Wales City Ordinance 20-15, which carries a $25 fine. The ordinance prohibits parking on streets such as Carlton Avenue, where “NO PARKING THIS SIDE OF STREET” signs are posted in both directions. Police noted that vehicles parked in this area often belong to individuals attempting to bypass the designated pick-up line, impeding traffic flow and creating safety concerns.
When we spoke to parents, they expressed confusion about where the pick-up line begins, suggesting that a detailed map could clarify the process.
A school spokesperson stated that the city and Lake Wales Police Department are working with the school and community to ensure compliance with parking regulations. The spokesperson also mentioned that some parents have been blocking crosswalks while in the car pick-up line, for which warnings were issued as well.
The Lake Wales Police Department and Hillcrest Elementary School are committed to ensuring a safe and efficient pick-up process for students. By adhering to posted parking regulations and utilizing the designated pick-up line, parents can help maintain smooth traffic flow and prioritize student safety. For any questions, parents are encouraged to contact Hillcrest Elementary School directly.
