July Perry’s bravery as a Black businessman and voting rights advocate profoundly impacted Orlando. His fight to secure voting rights for Black residents, who were systematically denied the right to vote, led to his tragic lynching, underscoring his commitment to justice and equality.

Perry’s defiance against those who blocked Black people from voting inspired resilience in Ocoee’s Black community. His sacrifice, killed by a White mob for his stand, highlighted the critical struggle for civil rights, galvanizing efforts to challenge systemic racism and voter suppression.

On June 21, 2019, a historical marker was unveiled at Heritage Square to honor Perry’s enduring legacy. It stands as a testament to his courage in fighting for Black voting rights, ensuring his story inspires future generations.
