Woman Charged After Making Threats To Local Cigar Lounge

Tampa, FL. (June 16, 2025) – – A Tampa woman was arrested after making threats to shoot people at a local business.

On Sunday, June 15, 2025, Tampa Police officers arrested 38-year-old Bernida Smith (black female, 01/05/1987) after she threatened to shoot patrons at a cigar lounge located on the 1700 block of E 7th Avenue.

According to witnesses, security guards asked Smith to leave for bringing unauthorized liquor inside the establishment. While resisting being ejected, Smith threatened to come back and shoot patrons at the lounge. Minutes later, Smith parked her vehicle in front of the lounge and approached the entrance armed with a shotgun.

Fortunately, two security guards, who were employed by the lounge, were able to disarm Smith, and she was arrested by officers patrolling in the immediate area.

“The quick and courageous actions of the security guards, combined with the rapid response of our officers, prevented what could have been a devastating tragedy,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “This incident is a reminder of the importance of strong partnerships between officers and our community, and their actions are a testament to the shared responsibility of keeping Tampa safe.”

While doing a search of Smith and her vehicle, officers found her to have two additional firearms.

Smith was charged with Two Felony Counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, One Felony Count of Shooting at within or into a Building, and One Misdemeanor Count of Improper Exhibition of a Dangerous Weapon or Firearm.
