Deputies Respond to Loose Cows in Eloise, One Injured in Dog Attack: Per PCSO
Eloise, FL — At approximately 10:39 a.m. on Sunday, April 13, 2025, Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a livestock call on 6th Street in Eloise, south of Winter Haven, where 4-5 cows were reported roaming loose in a residential neighborhood.

Two deputies located the cows behind a residence. While one stayed with the animals, the other attempted to find the owner. As the deputy approached the front of the property, a large pit bull, identified by the family as Draco, allegedly charged toward them. The deputy drew their firearm and fired several shots, striking the dog at least once and accidentally shooting herself in the leg.
The second deputy applied a tourniquet to the wounded deputy’s leg. The injured deputy was transported to a hospital, where the bullet was found to have passed through their right calf without hitting bone or an artery. They are expected to recover.

The dog was later treated and is in stable condition, though the family reports ongoing pain. The dog’s owner was cited for lack of tags, no vaccinations, and allowing the dog to roam.
The cows were returned to their owner, and the fence they escaped from was repaired.
Family’s Account of Events
The family claims Draco, a 10 year old pit bull, was accidentally let out when the children were excited to see the sheriff’s deputy with the cows. Draco ran toward the deputy without making contact. The family says the deputy fired several shots, first hitting her own leg, then striking Draco’s lower back as he retreated, despite not biting. The family alleges Draco suffered for over an hour before veterinary care was permitted at 12:54 p.m., leaving a bullet lodged in his back.
The incident remains under investigation. Nothing further at this time.
