Auburndale, Florida — Omega Mothersill, a dedicated educator at Auburndale High School in Polk County, has been named a recipient of the 2026 Excellence in Education Award by the Florida Department of Education.
Mothersill is one of only four Florida educators selected for this honor, which recognizes outstanding contributions to education and is presented during Black History Month. The awards highlight exceptional teachers who inspire students and exemplify excellence in the classroom.
Nominations for the award came from a wide range of sources, including principals, fellow teachers, parents or guardians, and students, reflecting the broad impact these educators have on their communities.
Mothersill received the award, along with a $2,500 monetary recognition provided by Volunteer Florida, at a special event held last week at the Governor’s Mansion in Tallahassee.

The Florida Department of Education, in partnership with Volunteer Florida, uses this contest to celebrate educators who go above and beyond in supporting student success and fostering inclusive learning environments.
Congratulations to Omega Mothersill on this well-deserved recognition! Her achievement brings pride to Auburndale High School, Polk County Public Schools, and the entire state of Florida’s education community.
