The Polk County Board of County Commissioners and county leaders celebrated Polk County’s 165th anniversary on Tuesday, Feb. 3 following the commission board meeting.
Although the official anniversary date is on Sunday, Feb. 8, county leaders and guests commemorated the milestone with remarks highlighting Polk County’s history, growth and commitment to serving residents and visitors throughout the years.
To celebrate the anniversary, signs highlighting key moments in Polk County’s history will be displayed in the lobby of the Polk County Government Administration Building located at 330 W. Church St. in Bartow. The displays will remain in place for several months to allow residents and visitors to learn more about the county’s history.
More information on Polk County’s history can be found at the Polk County History Center and Genealogical Library located at 100 E. Main St. in Bartow.
“Being able to celebrate the county’s 165th anniversary marks a major milestone for Polk County. As a former educator, I encourage everyone to visit the Polk County History Center and Genealogical Library in Bartow,” said Commission Chair Martha Santiago. “The Polk County History Center provides an excellent display of county history including Polk County’s cultural heritage, the county’s early and recent pioneers and a great display on Legacy in Government honorees, which highlights former government leaders.”
Established in 1861, Polk County was named to honor President James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States.
