Polk County has enacted a mandatory burn ban effective today until further notice. The ban applies countywide and includes the municipalities of Auburndale, Bartow, Davenport, Dundee, Fort Meade, Frostproof, Haines City, Lake Alfred, Lake Wales, Lakeland, and Winter Haven.
The burn ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including:
- Campfires
- Bonfires
- Unpermitted controlled burns
- Burning of yard and household trash
- Burning of organic debris
- Ignition or use of fireworks
- Noncommercial burning of any materials
The only exception is burning for religious or ceremonial purposes, which must be contained within a barbecue grill or pit with a total fuel area not exceeding three feet in diameter and two feet in height.
The restriction was implemented due to drought conditions and dry vegetation that increase wildfire risk.
