Kissimmee, FL — The City of Kissimmee has received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice through the FY25 COPS Hiring Program, administered by the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The funding will support the addition of six new sworn police officer positions to the Kissimmee Police Department.
The grant covers 40% of the $1.87 million project budget for the new positions, with the City of Kissimmee funding the remaining 60%. This brings the total number of new sworn officers for the current fiscal year to 12, following the Kissimmee City Commission’s prior approval of four additional police officers and two sergeants for the 2026 budget.
The funding will facilitate community partnerships, public safety assessments, and personnel management changes to enhance community policing efforts. The grant is pending formal acceptance by the Kissimmee City Commission, with a performance period from October 1, 2025, to September 30, 2030.
City Manager Mike Steigerwald stated, “This grant is an investment in public safety, and it’s an investment in our future. It allows us to bring in additional officers who will deepen our community partnerships and help ensure we’re not just keeping up, but staying ahead.”
