28-Year-Old Driver Ejected and Fatally Injured in Eagle Lake Crash

EAGLE LAKE, FL – A fatal single-vehicle crash is under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations Unit following a crash Wednesday night in Eagle Lake.

The crash occurred on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at approximately 9:24 p.m. at the intersection of US 17 and Winter Lake Road/North Cameron Road.

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, evidence and witness statements indicate a gray Toyota Camry was traveling eastbound on Winter Lake Road at a high rate of speed when the driver approached the intersection with US 17 and failed to stop for a red light.

Investigators said the Camry struck a sidewalk and then became airborne for approximately 50 feet, continuing east across an open field before entering a wooded area. The vehicle then traveled another 200 feet while striking multiple trees.

The 28-year-old male driver was ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of the crash. Authorities said the vehicle’s airbags deployed and the driver was wearing a seat belt. The investigation remains ongoing.
