Woman Sentenced to 29.5 Years for DUI Manslaughter Five Years After Fatal 2020 Crash

(Sumter County, FL) On September 5, 2025, 24-year-old Jasmine Daebreon Grover was sentenced by Judge Mary P. Hatcher to 29.5 years in the Florida Department of Corrections, followed by one year of probation, for her DUI manslaughter case.

Earlier this year, a jury found Grover guilty of Driving Under the Influence Manslaughter in connection with a fatal vehicle crash that killed 21-year-old Alexes Olivia Matthews. Grover was also convicted of Driving Under the Influence with Serious Bodily Injury, Driving Under the Influence Causing Injury, Driving Under the Influence with Property Damage, and Possession of Cannabis.

On February 9, 2020, Grover, then 19 years old, was driving a vehicle with three passengers, including the victim. Grover, who was under the influence, lost control of the vehicle while driving on County Road 476 in Sumter County.

She veered off the road onto the shoulder and overcorrected in an attempt to regain control, causing the vehicle to cross to the opposite shoulder. The vehicle then left the roadway entirely and crashed into a tree. The impact ejected the victim and caused the vehicle to roll on top of her, resulting in her death.

A Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigation confirmed Grover was driving at the time of the crash, based on statements from the two surviving occupants.

First responders reported Grover exhibited bloodshot, watery eyes, dilated pupils, slurred speech, and a thick tongue, all consistent with impairment. A substantial amount of cannabis was recovered from Grover’s waistband at the scene.

A blood draw revealed significant quantities of cannabis and Etizolam, a controlled substance, in Grover’s system at the time of the crash.

This evidence, combined with testimony from witnesses, Florida Highway Patrol, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Medical Examiner’s Office, and other medical professionals, was presented during the trial.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Joseph Church and Sonny McCathran.
