VERO BEACH, FL — July 21, 2026 — Seventeen girls between the ages of 10 and 14 experienced their first flying lesson this week through a partnership between Skyborne Airline Academy and the nonprofit PreFlight Aviation Camp, introducing them to careers in aviation while helping break down gender stereotypes in the industry.
The hands-on program gives campers the opportunity to learn about aviation through Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM), fly in simulators, and take a discovery flight with a female flight instructor.
Among the participants was Melbourne Beach resident Gwynith Matarazzo, who said the experience inspired her dream of becoming an airline pilot.
“My favorite part of PreFlight Camp has been learning about how women in aviation paved the path for us,” Matarazzo said. “I would love to be an airline pilot because flying can bring you to different cultures and help you learn about other places. I love how flying brings people together.”
PreFlight Aviation Camp is one of Skyborne’s chosen charitable partners and is designed to encourage young girls to explore careers in aviation by providing hands-on flight training and mentorship.
Skyborne Airline Academy operates its U.S. training facility in Vero Beach and partners with several major airlines to help train the next generation of commercial pilots.
