R. Kelly Hospitalized After Alleged Overdose in Prison

Butner, North Carolina- June 17, 2025

R. Kelly, the disgraced R&B singer serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking, was hospitalized last week following an alleged overdose of medication at the Federal Correctional Institute in Butner, North Carolina, according to his legal team.

Court documents filed Monday claim prison staff administered an “overdose quantity” of medication while Kelly was in solitary confinement, leading to dizziness, faintness, and life-threatening blood clots. He was rushed to Duke University Hospital but was removed after two days, reportedly against medical advice, despite a recommended seven-day stay and potential surgery.

Kelly’s lawyers allege a pattern of mistreatment, including a prior claim of an orchestrated plot to have him killed by another inmate, though federal prosecutors have dismissed these assertions as unfounded.

The incident has reignited debates about prison healthcare, with a 2022 Bureau of Prisons report noting a 30% higher inmate mortality rate due to inadequate medical care. Kelly, convicted in 2021 and 2022 on multiple charges including child sexual abuse imagery, remains a polarizing figure as his legal team pushes for his release to home detention.

Nothing further at this time .
