Polk County Suspends Burn Ban Through April 16 After Heavy Rain

BARTOW, FL (April 9, 2026) — Polk County has temporarily suspended its countywide burn ban, which had been in effect since Nov. 25, 2025. The suspension will remain in place until 11:59 p.m. on April 16, 2026.

County officials said the decision follows recent heavy rainfall that has eased prolonged drought conditions. Fire Chief Shawn Smith noted that while the rain has provided relief, long-range forecasts are not favorable for a full repeal of the burn ban, allowing only for a temporary suspension.

As of April 8, Polk County’s average Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is 360, with 97% of the county measuring below 500. The KBDI scale ranges from 0 to 800 and is used to assess soil moisture, with higher values indicating more severe drought conditions.

Officials thanked residents for complying with the extended burn ban and encouraged continued caution. Residents are permitted to have campfires, bonfires, and other legal fires during the suspension but are urged to burn responsibly and keep a water source nearby.

Authorities advise that any potentially dangerous fires should be reported to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Non-Emergency Line at (863) 298-6200, or by calling 9-1-1 in emergencies involving immediate threats to life or property.
