Lakeland Man, 65, Killed After Bypassing Crossing Arms in Fatal Amtrak Collision

Lakeland, FL – A 65-year-old Lakeland man was killed Monday afternoon when the bicycle he was riding collided with an Amtrak passenger train on Eastside Drive, authorities said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Joseph Gordon Evju. The incident occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. as the northbound Amtrak train, en route from Miami to Tampa, was traveling at 77 mph with 191 passengers aboard.

Investigators say the railroad crossing arms were fully engaged and warning signals activated when Evju maneuvered around the barriers. Preliminary reports indicate the bicyclist either did not hear or disregarded the train’s horn before the impact. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.

The scene remained active for several hours as PCSO investigated. Amtrak officials have been notified and are cooperating with local authorities. Nothing further at this time.
