Fatal Crash on US 17: Driver Ejected, Killed in Single-Vehicle Accident Near Fort Meade

Fort Meade, FL – On July 21, 2025, at 4:56 p.m., a single-vehicle crash occurred on US 17 near Bill Bryan Road, resulting in the death of the driver. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating.

A silver Chevrolet truck, driven by 35-year-old Alejandro Toledo of Zolfo Springs, was traveling southbound on US 17 in the inside left lane. The roads were wet due to rain. Toledo attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control while transitioning from the outside to the inside lane. The truck slid southwest toward the shoulder, began to rotate, and flipped multiple times, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. During the crash, Toledo, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and came to rest in a wood line along the west side of the highway. The truck’s airbags did not deploy.

Toledo was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.

Eye in the Sky News extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
