Suspect Fatally Shot by Deputies in Brandon After Brandishing Assault Rifle

The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. near Causeway Boulevard and Providence Road, prompting multiple 911 calls from concerned drivers. Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer said the suspect, dressed in army fatigues, body armor, and a communication headset, was carrying a fully loaded assault rifle with two additional magazines.


Deputies responded and repeatedly ordered the suspect to drop his weapon. When he failed to comply, three deputies opened fire at approximately 7:38 a.m., killing him.

The suspect’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities noted he had prior misdemeanor charges, including trespassing and marijuana possession, but no violent criminal history.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating. Chief Deputy Maurer assured the public that the community is safe.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene of a deputy-involved shooting at the intersection of Windingwood Avenue and Providence Road in Brandon.

Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer will update the media at 10 a.m. on this investigation. This investigation will be conducted by FDLE.
