18-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Lakeland Crash

Lakeland, FL — An 18-year-old motorcyclist was killed Thursday evening, July 10, 2025, in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of County Road 540A and Harrells Nursery Road in Lakeland. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office reported that the crash occurred when a 2018 GMC Terrain, driven by 57-year-old David Thomsen of Winter Haven, made a left turn from Harrells Nursery Road onto CR 540A, colliding with an eastbound 2014 Yamaha R6 motorcycle operated by Miguel Santiago Zapata.

Deputies arrived at the scene around 9:58 PM and found Santiago Zapata, a Lakeland resident, with fatal injuries. The impact ejected him approximately 200 feet from the collision site, despite him wearing a helmet. The SUV sustained significant damage, but Thomsen, its sole occupant, was uninjured.

The crash led to the closure of County Road 540A in both directions for about four hours as authorities investigated. No criminal charges are anticipated at this time, though the investigation remains ongoing.

Lakeland, FL – At 9:58 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2025, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal crash on County Road 540 A near Valleyview Elementary School. The road is closed in both directions between Harrels Nursery Road and Pollard Road.
