On This Day in Florida History: Tropical Storm Fay Makes Landfall – August 18, 2008

On August 18, 2008, Tropical Storm Fay made landfall in Key West, Florida at approximately 3:00 p.m. EDT with maximum sustained winds near 60 mph (95 km/h).

After crossing the Florida Keys, Fay entered the Gulf of Mexico before turning northeast and making a second Florida landfall near Naples on August 19, 2008. The storm tracked across the Florida peninsula, producing heavy rainfall totals exceeding 20 inches in some areas, particularly in east-central Florida.

Fay is notable for making a record four separate landfalls in Florida:

  1. Key West – August 18
  2. Near Naples – August 19
  3. Near Melbourne – August 20
  4. Near Carrabelle (Panhandle) – August 23

The storm caused widespread flooding, power outages, and infrastructure damage. Fay was responsible for at least 11 fatalities in Florida and caused an estimated $560 million in damages across the state.
