Orange County, FL — According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, on February 8, 2025, at approximately 11:30 p.m., deputies responded to a reported burglary at a home in the 100 block of W. Castle Street, where 26-year-old Jose Luis Lopez-Lopez had called 911 for help. Upon arrival, they observed Lopez-Lopez and 25-year-old Cristian Duran Contreras fighting in the kitchen through a back window. The Sheriff’s Office has released body-camera footage capturing the confrontation and subsequent shooting.
Lopez-Lopez held Contreras in a headlock, and deputies, believing he had a knife, ordered him to drop it. When he did not comply, two deputies fired their weapons, striking Lopez-Lopez in the head. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. No knife was found at the scene.
Investigators learned the men, co-workers at a roofing company, had been drinking outside Lopez-Lopez’s home when a dispute over money for beer turned violent. Contreras allegedly broke into the home through a kitchen window, prompting Lopez-Lopez’s 911 call. Body-camera footage captured the confrontation and shooting.
Contreras faces charges of second-degree felony murder, burglary to an occupied dwelling, burglary of a conveyance, and petit theft. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the deputy-involved shooting, and the deputies are on paid administrative leave. The Sheriff’s Office released the footage to promote transparency.
