DeSantis Awards $276K for Agricultural Drone Education at Polk State

LAKE WALES, FL — Governor Ron DeSantis visited Lake Wales Wednesday afternoon to announce $276,069 in grant funding for Polk State College to expand agricultural technology education, including the use of drones and other emerging technologies.

According to Polk State College, the funding, awarded through the Florida Department of Education’s Workforce Capitalization Grant program, will support the acquisition of several unmanned aircraft systems for agricultural programs through the college’s AgriPolk initiative. Students will also have opportunities to earn drone-related certifications.

The funding will expand dual enrollment opportunities, allowing high school students to gain hands-on experience in agricultural technology while earning college credit and developing workforce skills.

“Florida is the number one state in the nation for workforce education because we have made historic investments in programs that prepare students for in-demand careers,” DeSantis said.

The announcement took place at Polk State’s JD Alexander Center in downtown Lake Wales.

Launched in October 2025, AgriPolk combines college coursework with agricultural training and certification opportunities through a partnership with the University of Florida.

Polk State is also developing an Associate in Science degree in Precision Agriculture Technology, which will go before the college’s District Board of Trustees for approval on November 30.

Wednesday’s visit also included the unveiling of new Florida Department of Transportation signage for the JD Alexander Center.
